In Heartbreak House, Shaw uses eccentric characters, witty dialogue and absurd situations
to create an entertaining and memorable comedy.
The play is about the Hushabye family and their guests,
who gather at Captain Shotover's ship-shaped house for a weekend of emotional
turmoil,
romantic entanglements, and social critique on the eve of World War I.
Young Ellie Dunn navigates her engagement to the industrialist Boss Mangan
and
her attraction to the deceptive Hector Hushabye,
while the eccentric Captain
Shotover tries to invent a weapon of mass destruction.
The play concludes with
a bang - litterally! - raid that kills two characters,
leaving the guests and the audience shaken and bemused.
